I am thrilled to present this new book authored by my friend Peter Barr. Peter is the foremost expert on North Carolina fire towers and his meticulous research and detailed writing bring these fascinating structures to life. Part hiking guide and part photography collection, this book contains wonderful stories about the history and folklore of the lookouts and their fire lookout inhabitants, a detailed guide of hikes to each, and details about the views at the top. The lookouts represent some of the best destinations for hikers who want to see the incredible vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
I am honored that Peter chose me to photograph the lookouts for this book. To create images that would do justice to Peter’s writing, I spent many months visiting and revisiting the lookouts, often spending the night at them. I photographed at sunrise and sunset, and often all night long. I shot some of the photos from airplanes and some from drones. And I employed a wide range of capturing techniques.
